Neuroscience Behind Self-Growth, Parenting, and Life Choices

A Deep Dive for Everyone on Their Growth Journey

On September 19, 2026, Mr. Fan Deng, founder and Chief Content Officer of Fan Shu APP, will visit New York University to deliver a special keynote speech in New York titled "Awakening to Growth."

"Awakening to Growth" is a deep dive for everyone on their growth journey.
This is a neuroscience-focused keynote speech on self, emotions, relationships, family, and life choices.

Living, studying, and working in North America, we are often expected to be more independent, outstanding, and successful.
However, few truly teach us how to understand our emotions, how to deal with the impact of our upbringing, how to stop repeatedly getting hurt in relationships, how to build healthier connections with parents, partners, and children, and how to become an internally stable and powerful individual.

True growth doesn't start with changing others, but with understanding oneself.

A Dialogue on Growth That Starts with "Self-Nurturing"

"Awakening to Growth" is not just a book for parents, nor is it merely a set of parenting methods.
It's more like a mirror, allowing us to see how we were raised, how we respond to relationships, how we manage emotions, and how we re-parent ourselves in adulthood.

Whether you are an international student, a young professional, a Chinese parent in North America, an education practitioner, or someone exploring self-growth, this lecture is worth attending.

Because each of us was once a child, and to some extent, we continue to be influenced by childhood experiences, family relationships, parental expectations, and our upbringing environment.

If you are a Chinese parent in North America

You might be experiencing these confusions:

Children are increasingly developing their own ideas, yet becoming harder to communicate with;
You've given a lot, but always feel your child doesn't understand or appreciate it;
Amidst the differences between Eastern and Western education, you don't know whether to stick to tradition or let go completely;
Facing your child's rebelliousness, anxiety, procrastination, and emotional issues, you feel both worried and helpless;
You want to be a better parent, but are often defeated by your own emotions.

Many times, the hardest part of parenting is not that children are "disobedient," but that parents themselves have never been properly understood.

In this lecture, Teacher Fandeng will help us re-understand the true needs behind children's behavior, and also re-examine our own emotional patterns in parent-child relationships, from the perspectives of neuroscience, psychology, and family education.

Parent yourself first, then parent your child.
Understand yourself first, then understand your child.
Become a more stable, more clear-headed adult first, then respond to your child and family relationships.

If you are an international student or a young person

Perhaps you, too, have asked yourself in New York, late at night in a foreign land:

What kind of person do I really want to be?
Is the direction I'm striving for now what I truly desire?
Why am I so far from home, yet still unable to escape the influence of my original family?
Why am I clearly excellent, yet still anxious, internally conflicted, and uncertain?
Why can I never truly communicate with my parents?
Why do I always lack security in relationships, or find it hard to express my true self?

Studying abroad, like growing up, is not simply moving from one place to another.
It is also a deep process of self-reconstruction.

This lecture will help you to re-understand yourself, the reasons behind your emotions, and how your original family influences your sense of security, relationship patterns, and life choices.

What will you gain on-site?

You will re-understand your relationship with your parents, and see how your family of origin influences your emotions, choices, and intimate relationships.

You will understand why we are often controlled by emotions, and learn how to pause from emotional reactions.

You will understand the neuroscientific logic behind children's behavior, and no longer be limited to "discipline" and "correction."

You will see the deeper logic behind the differences between Chinese and Western education, and find communication methods more suitable for overseas Chinese families.

You will understand why the starting point of "parenting" is not to change the child, but for the parents to grow first.

You will also understand that growth is not about forcing yourself to be stronger, but about finally beginning to understand yourself.

Who is this talk for?

This lecture is particularly suitable for:

North American international students, young professionals, and new immigrants;
Those contemplating their family of origin, personal growth, and life direction;
Those hoping to improve their intimate relationships, family relationships, and self-relationship;
North American Chinese parents;
Families experiencing difficulties in parent-child communication;
Parents concerned about their children's education, mental health, and growth motivation;
Educators and mental health professionals;
Anyone hoping to move from anxiety, internal friction, and control towards clarity, connection, and strength.

This is not a lecture solely for parents.
It is a lecture for everyone who is "growing."
